Why Tracking the Parcel Feels Better Than Opening It
This article is inspired by a post I made on Reddit.
Everyone “knows” about dopamine – but most people get it wrong.
Dopamine is not a pleasure chemical, even though people often call it the reward chemical. It’s actually the neurotransmitter for anticipation, not satisfaction.
Your brain releases dopamine when you’re seeking reward, not when you get the reward. It’s the signal that says “keep going, something good is coming.”
That’s useful for survival. It kept your ancestors searching for food, tracking animals, solving problems. The dopamine drove the hunter-gatherer stuff.
Modern shopping has hijacked that system. The hunt is browsing, researching, comparing prices, reading reviews. The reward is supposed to be the item itself, but by the time it arrives, dopamine has done its job, and so already dropped.
The tracking phase is where it peaks. Your brain is in pursuit mode, something is coming, progress is visible, the anticipation builds… “Out for delivery”… omigod!
Opening the package is the end of the hunt, so dopamine crashes. What’s left is just the object, which your brain no longer cares about because the chase is over.
So you start a new hunt. Not consciously – your brain just fires the urge again, looking for that anticipation high.
This is why people with shopping addiction often have multiple orders in transit simultaneously. They’re not trying to acquire more things, they’re trying to maintain a constant state of anticipation. A dopamine high.
It’s also why the packages sometimes sit unopened. Opening them ends the dopamine cycle, but as long as they’re still coming, the anticipation continues.
So here’s a sneaky way to use that to help you detox… because anticipation is infinite – there’s always something else to hunt.
You need to break the loop, so try this:
Anticipation Detox
Anything already ordered, when it arrives, goes straight into a closet unopened. Then mark each day on a calendar – did you order something new? Rate the urge 1-10 even if you resisted.
After 28 days clean (NO new orders), you can open everything at once. It’s like advent calendar in reverse – delayed gratification with a juicy endpoint.
It can work because you break the arrival-disappointment-hunt/gather cycle.
You’re building awareness of when urges spike, and you’re proving to yourself you can actually wait and you still get the goodies you already paid for – while going 28 days clean.
