My Method

Private, online sessions via Zoom. You stay awake, we talk, and I guide the conversation to untangle the loops keeping you stuck. Usually takes 1-3 sessions.

Why normal approaches stop working

Budgeting, phone apps, support groups, conventional therapy – even conventional hypnotherapy – most attempts at controlling a growing shopping addiction fail for two main reasons.

The first is they attempt to manage the problem, instead of understanding or resolving it. This fails because compulsive spending tends to get worse, meaning over time ever-more extreme measures are needed – and then even those might not stop your slide.

The second main failure is they treat shopping addiction as a spending problem. It isn’t. It’s the symptom of your system being hijacked; the symptom is not the root cause.

By the time you click “buy now,” the decision’s already been made by a process your conscious mind cannot control. That’s why you can feel you’re viewing from outside, seeing the coming train-wreck, but unable to stop yourself.

Each time stress, boredom or fear hits, the automatic loop fires again – and every repetition makes it stronger. The longer it runs, the faster and deeper it goes. That’s why people say, “I used to be good with money, but…”

How the Trap Is Built

Modern marketing deliberately hijacks your mind’s “auto-pilot” and defensive loops. These are perfectly normal and natural mechanisms, but marketing exploits them. It links relief, shame and identity to buying, promising control, comfort, confidence – then feeds the cycle with carefully-timed scarcity, social ‘proof’ and dopamine-reward triggers.

What starts as “treating yourself” or even “retail therapy” (gah!) slowly becomes an unconscious stress-response pattern. Over time, it stops feeling like choice and starts feeling more like survival.

If you have a choice, you’re having fun. If you have no choice, then you already have an addiction.

That’s the spiral – and it’s why I had to walk away from my marketing life and do this work instead.

How I Cut Through It

I used to design marketing campaigns and methods to amplify your mind’s responses to create exactly that kind of spiral, to exploit our natural fear of missing out, our sense of deserving a reward, our need to fit in, etc. etc. etc.

Everyone thinks they’re immune to marketing, because their conscious mind can and usually does reject it. But the multi-billion dollar numbers and the return-of-investment in marketing don’t lie – marketing works, and much of it is because it works subconsciously.

Essentially the same principles of hypnosis, but not the stage stuff; no deep trance. Marketing is much lighter, more subtle, triggering your mind’s natural stress relief pathways. Usually you can cope, but over time – due to life stress, boredom or something deeper – the loops can creep around you, trapping you like slow-growing jungle vines (hence the machete in my logo).

And then it’s not so slow. You find you’re sliding further out of control, and consciously resisting just doesn’t work anymore.

Now I use the same psychological principles to cut through those loops, so you can pull yourself out of that spiral.

My process looks like a conversation, not a deep trance.

We talk, while you remain awake.

Online, in private.

I listen carefully, then ask the kind of questions and keep making the observations that help move your conscious and subconscious minds together. To sync, so that instead of fighting each other, both parts of your mind are back together, working as a team again.

Just like they should be, and used to be, before you began fighting against yourself!

Results

Once the above happens, your perspective shifts.

You know how other people are subjected to the same apps, the same marketing, the same brands as you are – but they don’t seem to get trapped in uncontrolled spending loops, like you do?

Well you become the same as them again, shopping by choice, on your own terms.

You can still enjoy shopping, in fact arguably more so, with no battle of “willpower”, no “resisting temptation” – the irrational urges simply… aren’t there.

Most clients only need one, occasionally two sessions.

One conversation to break the loop. Not weekly sessions. Not years of coping strategies getting less and less effective.

We cut your personal loops, in private, giving you back control.

Real control, over yourself, not the false sense of control from spending.

Neurodivergent?

ADHD, OCD, or autism don’t cause shopping addiction, but they do change how the loops operate. The approach adjusts – we go slower, focus on how your specific wiring creates the pattern, plus I’m more likely to give you tools or resources. Same destination, different path.
